A Queer Millennial Memoir

Amos Lassen

Advice columnist John Paul Brammer brings us his memoir as a queer millennial. In “Hell Papi” he takes us into his past experiences of growing up queer and Mexican in rural Oklahoma. He shares stories about being bullied in middle school and then later meeting that school bully later on Grindr. We read about  his past with sexual assault that went unnamed because we did not have the language to talk about it. Brammer had to learn to be, dress, and act gay and discovered that there was just so much to learn.  only to eventually realize that such educational opportunities are far too nuanced to be easily learned and adhered to.

The stories are compelling and moving and the writing is compelling. Above all this memoir ishonest, thoughtful, and very funny. This is the story of his learning to love himself.  Brammer is able to balance humor and serious themes and seems to be able to write about anything in ways that hold the reader.
