A Story Cycle
Allan Gurganus’s “The Uncollected Stories of Allan Gurganus” shows us that he is seriously funny writer. Here he brings us nine stories that have never been published before and they show his literary mastery.
“Once upon a time” introduces us to a mortician whose dedication to his dead clients goes beyond all legal limits. In another story we meet a couple trying to save their family dog from Maine’s fierce undertow. We have a prim seventy-eight-year-old grammar school librarian who has her only intimate experience with a snake farmer. In yet another story a vicious tornado kills one of a set of twin boys and cholera hits a rural village in 1849 where the citizens come blame the young doctor who had saved hundreds.
The stories are filled with description, movement, sound, and meaning and are written in gorgeous prose.
