“GOTTA HAVE HEART”— Early Eytan Fox
“Gotta Have Heart” (“Ba’al Ba’al Lev”)
Early Eytan Fox
Amos Lassen
Eytan Fox who went on to give us such great movies such as “Yossi and Jagger”, “Walk on Water” and “The Bubble” made this short musical film in 1998 and it is a look at young love in a small town in Israel. Guri wants to go to school in Tel Aviv before people learn that he is gay, Mitzi is afraid she will be an old maid, Nadav dreams of winning the Eurovision Song Contest and Merito, the local stud has a surprise he is hiding.
Originally produced for Israeli television as part of a series on love, this is the film that stood out above the rest not only because it is about gay characters but because it is so filled with camp and fantasy. It is a story of mixed identities and the use of music is an important aspect of the film. It is a film that makes the viewer smile but it is also a film of intelligence. We can surely see here why Fox has gone on to have such a successful career.
