“THE RINGU COLLECTION”— 3-Disc Special Edition Collector’s Set

“THE RINGU COLLECTION”

3-Disc Special Edition Collector’s Set

Amos Lassen

Director Hideo Nakata’s “The Ringu Collection” is a chilling story of technological terror. Originally released in 1988, it redefined the horror genre by introducing a creepy, dark-haired girl called Sadako a generation of moviegoers. The film’s success brought about remakes, reimaginations and imitators, but none could quite compare to the power of Nakata s original which melded traditional Japanese folklore with contemporary anxieties about the spread of technology.

It all begins when a group of teenage friends are found dead and their bodies are grotesquely contorted and their faces are twisted in terror. Reiko (Nanako Matsushima), a journalist and the aunt of one of the victims, begins investigating the shocking phenomenon, and in the process uncovers a creepy urban legend about a cursed videotape, the contents of which causes anyone who sees it to die within a week unless they can persuade someone else to watch it, and, in so doing, pass on the curse…

Arrow Video’s genre-defining trilogy consists of the film that started it all plus Hideo Nakata’s chilling sequel “Ringu 2”,the haunting origin story, “Ringu 0” as well as the ‘lost’ original sequel, George Iida’s “Spiral” remastered in high definition and with many archival and newly created bonus materials. “Ringu” is easily the most impressive of the films here and the new 4K restoration sets a new standard for horror on home video.
