Poole, Eric. “Where’s My Wand?: One Boy’s Magical Triumph Over Alienation and Shag Carpeting”, Penguin, 2011.
Meet Eric Poole
When I read that Eric Poole is the secret love child of Fran Lebowitz and David Sedaris, I knew I would love this book. With such talented parents, I figured the book would be genius.
Poole’s childhood is a laugh fest that begins in the 1970’s in St. Louis. His mother was obsessive-compulsive and he avoided her as much possible. But that is not all—his teachers were sadistic and the thugs of the neighborhood did not like him. He lived to watch Endora on “Bewitched” and imitated her and even dressed up in a caftan and pretended to cast magical spells but he soon learned that all the magic in the world could do away with the evil in the world. He set out on a journey to find himself and to understand the magic that he loved.
Poole grew up both gay and Baptist so we already know that the road was not easy for him and as funny as this book is, it is also tender and sensitive. And his mother!!!!!!! What can we say except that he was lucky enough to grow up at all. There is not too much I can say about the book without spoiling your fun but take my advice and put it on your to read list. The book is as poignant as it is funny.
