A Crazy Horror Movie

Amos Lassen

Bill Whitney (Billy Warwick) is a loner and he knows that he is different than the rest of the family. His sister and his parents tend to cavort with the upper class; Bill is down to earth and class differences mean nothing to him. He has it all—wealth, position, he lives in a mansion’ his girlfriend is a cheerleader and he is popular with his friends. Something just does not feel quite right. Then his sister’s ex-boyfriend gives him a tape that shows his family along with others from the upper class having an orgy and taking part in a murder. But then as the movie progresses we are not sure if Bill really sees these things or could they just be in his mind? But then (there always seems to be a “but then”), Bill sees his sister, Jenny (Patrice Jennings) taking a shower and her body twists into outlandish shapes.

This was not just a one time occurrence, they begin to happen more and more and when we finally learn about what is going on, we are shocked. While whatever is responsible for what is happening is never explained, those that cause it has apparently been around for a very long time. But it is best to be prepared for one of the strangest orgies you will ever seen and keep in mind that this film was made in the 80s—you will see things that you never seen before or even dreamt about.

Brian Yuzna directed this and it is not like anything you have ever seen before. Paranoia is one of the dominant themes as is the idea of the rich using the poor. While the film is quite disturbing, I do not mean that as a negative statement. I think, though, above all else, it is a look at social class in this country in a satirical way.

The special effects are amazing but one has to see them to believe them. The film makes an ostentatious and an avant-garde use of gore effects and I had to wonder if the film was made just so we could get to the closing scene.

Billy becomes so upset by some of what he sees that he goes to therapy where his doctor (Ben Slack) appears a bit leery when Billy tells him that something weird is going on in his home life. When Billy learns that his parents and sister may be involved in some kind of sick sexual cult, he becomes increasingly concerned that his wealthy “society” neighbors may not be like Billy. In fact, they may not be human at all! As Billy digs deeper and deeper into his family secret, he finds a truth so horrifying and disgusting that he becomes distraught. More than the first third of the film is about Billy telling everyone he meets that something strange is going on. No one seems to believe him. He sees his sister in the shower washing her behind…while facing forward. Then he hears on a cassette recorder that his family is involved in some sort of weird ritual. He panics and starts running around some more. The movie is filled with naked bodies, twisted flesh and morphing effects.

Billy discovers that society is “a cabal of body-contorting, flesh-melting, polymorphously perverse Nietzschean ubermensch, whose orgies would give De Sade a run for his money…”
