Sheff, Richard, M.D. “Doctor Confidential: Secrets Behind the Veil”, Listen To Your Heart Press, 2011.
What the Doctor Knows
This is m one of the most d]fascinating books I have ever read as it discloses the secrecy surrounding the medical profession. Medicine is the profession that deals with compassion and love especially because death is such an integral part of it.
The author has been a family physician for over 25 years and he admits that the way patients are treated is not always correct. We see so much about doctors by reading what Dr. Sheff has to say. He tells us stories of his own life which are not unique to him as he shares experiences with my others. This is his autobiography and he shares his medical school and residency experiences with us. I will find it hard to look at doctors in the same way again.
Sheff is an excellent writer and he takes us into the medical profession in a way we have never been privy to before. The book is filled with detail and he writes in a way that holds us to the page. I just want him to be my doctor because I am sure he is just as good a doctor as he is a writer. He obviously cares about his profession as much as he cares about his patients. While he gives us information about medicine, he also takes us along with him as he gains the wisdom to be compassionate and to learn. It is one thing to know something but it is something else to be able to apply that knowledge. He shows us the choices he made and he tells us why and these are not just for medicine but for life. Medicine is also about one’s heart and feelings, knowing what to say and what not to say. This is more than just a book; it is an experience.
