Putting the Pieces Together

                         Amos Lassen

If you have Anthony Bidulka’s writing in the pest then you have met Russell Quant and did so at better times for him. He has had a rough past. His boyfriend dumped him and he lost his sports roadster and he has been feeling that the only beating hearts that love him belong to his dogs. Suddenly, things seem to be getting a bit better for him and he gets a phone call from an old “friend” that gives him a reason to keep plugging.

We meet Quant in Zihuatanejo, Mexico where he is relaxing after his last case that we read about in “Aloha, Candy Hearts”. When he gets a voicemail from Jane Cross, a private detective in Chicago, requesting a bit of help with a case, he returns to Saskatchewan where he finds a murder scene. He took some files to discover that before the murder, Jane was working on a case about food poisoning and an old woman. As he investigates he discovers that there s some kind of contract out on rich elderly women. Bidulka can really build characters and he adds a new one here, as well—Jean-Paul Taine and he keeps us wondering just who he is. There is something mysterious in his past life and Quant wants to find out more about him. Everything is very exciting taking us to climax filled with disaster yet the ending is somewhat open letting us know that there will be another Russell Quant mystery novel coming soon. I can’t wait to read it.
